Activity Highlights
Walking Tour of Old Havana
Plaza de San Francisco de Asís takes its name from the Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asís, a Franciscan monastery which is now used for music concerts. It is also well known for its Fuente de los Leones, which was once a fresh water supply to passing ships.
The Maqueta de la Habana Vieja museum exhibits a 1:500 scale model of Old Havana, the perfect way to see how the capitol city fits together. The museum offers a rich study into the architectural history of Havana through the model and slide show presentations. Curators can also describe the urban planning methodology presently in use by the Cuban government.
Plaza de la Catedral (Cathedral Square) is one of the five main squares in Old Havana and the site of the Cathedral of Havana from which it takes its name. It is the site of the Museo del Arte Colonial (Colonial Art Museum) and a number of restaurants.
Museum of Fine Arts
Celebrate Cuban art at the Museum of Fine Arts. In the museum’s Palacio de Bellas Artes, displays are dedicated exclusively to Cuban works from colonial to contemporary times. Earlier works exhibit landscape, religious and daily life depictions, while pieces from the 1970s and later years often exhibit hyperrealism and strong symbolic imagery.
Museum of the Revolution
The Museum of the Revolution (Museo de la Revolución) is housed in the former presidential palace, home to Cuban presidents from the early 1900s until the period following revolution. In 1959 it became a museum, exhibiting items from 1950s to present day. Displays act as a timeline of the revolutionary war and Castro’s takeover of Cuba. Two notable exhibits are wax statues of Cuban revolutionaries Che Guevarra and Camilo Cienfuegos.
Hairstylists Alley
Hairstylists Alley (Santo Angel Arte Corte) in old Havana is an economic project featuring Cuban and international foods, craft, textile, and collectibles shops, and as the name suggests, hair salons. Here, Cuban locals and business owners live and work in harmony, offering visitors a firsthand experience of Cuban enterprise and culture.
Colon Cemetery
Havana’s Colon Cemetery is regarded as one of the world’s most important cemeteries, both historically and architecturally, and certainly the most important in Latin America. It was named for Christopher Columbus and designed with a structure defining the social rank of the dead. This cemetery is composed of more than 140 acres showcasing elaborate sculptures, and over 500 estimated major mausoleums, chapels, and family vaults.
Cigar Factory
Step into the world of Cuba’s famed cigars with a visit to a cigar factory where you may observe the time-honored techniques of local cigar rollers. The tour will also include a stop at Casa del Habano, long regarded as one of the finest smoking clubs. It is considered a premier destination by collectors, not only for its fine cigar collection, but also for its experienced staff. Located in the modern area of Miramar, Casa del Habano offers three private rooms and a walk-in humidor.
Havana Club Rum Museum
The Havana Club Rum Museum offers guests a taste of true Cuban culture while providing insight into the history and craft of rum-making. The tour will demonstrate the art of wooden cask-making, the history of the mule-driven mills at the earliest refineries and the tools of distillation. Artifacts from the various steps in the process will take visitors from sugar cane stalk to beverage. In the bar upstairs, guests can order a classic mojito or daiquiri.
