Cuba FAM Activity Highlights
Walking Tour of Old Havana
Plaza de San Francisco de Assis takes its name from the Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asis, a Franciscan monastery which is now used for music concerts. It is also well known for its Fuente de los Leones, which was once a fresh water supply to passing ships.
The Maqueta de la Habana Vieja museum exhibits a 1:500 scale model of Old Havana, the perfect way to see how the capitol city fits together. The museum offers a rich study into the architectural history of Havana through the model and slide show presentations. Curators can also describe the urban planning methodology presently in use by the Cuban government.
Plaza de la Catedral (Cathedral Square) is one of the five main squares in Old Havana and the site of the Cathedral of Havana from which it takes its name. It is the site of the Museo del Arte Colonial (Colonial Art Museum) and a number of restaurants.
Plaza de Armas is the oldest of the main plazas and sits on the site where Havana was founded. During the colonial period, it was the parade ground for the military and home to the Governor’s palace. Today, the palm-line square boasts Hotel Santa Isabel, a monument to “Father of the Nation” Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, and the El Templete monument marking the city’s founding.
Museum of Fine Arts
Celebrate Cuban art at the Museum of Fine Arts. In the museum’s Palacio de Bellas Artes, displays are dedicated exclusively to Cuban works from colonial to contemporary times. Earlier works exhibit landscape, religious and daily life depictions, while pieces from the 1970s and later years often exhibit hyperrealism and strong symbolic imagery.
La Divina Pastora
La Divina Pastora offers an unparalleled setting behind the fortresses on Havana Bay. Across the water, you can see Old Havana as you dine on fresh, Cuban-inspired seafood and wine. You may even experience the evening cannon firing at La Fortaleza.
Colon Cemetery
Havana’s Colon Cemetery is regarded as one of the world’s most important cemeteries, both historically and architecturally, and certainly the most important in Latin America. It was named for Christopher Columbus and designed with a structure defining the social rank of the dead. This cemetery is composed of more than 140 acres showcasing elaborate sculptures, and over 500 estimated major mausoleums, chapels, and family vaults.
Cigar Factory
Step into the world of Cuba’s famed cigars with a visit to a cigar factory where you may observe the time-honored techniques of local cigar rollers. The tour will also include a stop at Casa del Habano, long regarded as one of the finest smoking clubs. It is considered a premier destination by collectors, not only for its fine cigar collection, but also for its experienced staff. Located in the modern area of Miramar, Casa del Habano offers three private rooms and a walk-in humidor.
National Theatre of Cuba
Opened in 1979, The National Theatre of Cuba (Teatro Nacional de Cuba) is located in Havana’s Revolution Plaza. The theater features modern architecture and two large rooms – the Covarrubias, seating 850, and the Sala Avallaneda, seating more than 2,000. The building also holds two art galleries showcasing both national and international art. Considered a part of the grand cultural landscape of Cuba, this theater regularly hosts landmark performances and foreign troupes.
